From Kyoto, you can take the Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe Station, but you should definitely take the train that goes via Hakata to Okayama or Hiroshima. Shin Kobe is near Tokyo Station and trains depart every half an hour and leave every hour.
If you have a Japan Rail Pass, the journey to Kyoto is completely covered and during the day JR buses to Kobe are used.
The main transport hub is Sannomiya station, while Kobe station is located to the west. Although it is an important station, there are a number of smaller stations along the way, such as Kiyomizu Station in the east and Tohoku Station in the south and east.
This is the best way to travel between the two major cities as well as the other major ports of Kobe and Sannomiya. The airport only handles domestic flights, but you have the option of stopping at either Sannaomiyas Kobe Station or Tohoku Station.
JR Kobe Line connects Kobe, Osaka and Himeji, and Kobe New Transit operates between Sannomiya Station and Tohoku Station at Sannaomiya's Kobe Station. The Kobe Awaji - Naruto highway runs from Kobe to Naruto and from Naruto to Awajima. Other expressways are the Kyushu-Kansai expressway, the Shibuya-Shizuoka expressway and the Nihonbashi-Kei-Nishi-Gakuin expressway. It includes the Koshien - Tachikawa - Chiba, Kojima - Saitama, Shikoku - Yamanote, Chiyohama - Jiro - Danshiki and Kajimori - Atsugi - Maki - Ibaraki.
